Hello Readers!

Are you one of the thousands of students across the globe who have been told that you need to repeat degrees, take supplementary courses, or upgrade your learning certificates just to meet the standards of the University or country you want to join? Well, there is a little-known concept called Lateral Entry that could be the key to unlocking the university of your dreams.

Lateral Entry Meaning

Lateral entry means that students get the opportunity to bypass the traditional first-year entry requirement and dive straight into a degree program at an advanced level. This innovative approach is rapidly gaining popularity as it caters to individuals with valuable work experience or prior education, equipping them with specialized skills and knowledge that are highly sought after in today’s competitive job market. Not only does it offer a more efficient and effective path to success, but also provides a platform for individuals to stand out in a competitive job market. International universities such as Universities like Harvard and UPenn are leading the way in offering this option while in India you can get lateral entry in colleges like IIT, Delhi Technological University (DTU), Anna University Tamil Nadu and  KK Modi University in Durg which are  among the few Indian universities offering lateral entry in its undergraduate and postgraduate  programs. KKMU offers lateral entry in B.TechBBAB.Com, and BCA, and postgraduate degrees like M.Tech, MBA, M.Com and MCA  that provide both students and working professionals a well-rounded education that prepares them for life long success in the modern world.

B.Tech Lateral Entry Admission

One of the many technical options in India is B.Tech lateral entry (LE). You can apply for B.Tech if you aspire to become an engineer. This concept allows you to pursue B.Tech programs from the second year of the usual B.Tech program in various colleges in India. Those who have completed their engineering diploma program can apply for admission through lateral entry in B.Tech  and choose a specialization of your choice.

The selection process involves having attempted any national/State Level Test/JEE/CAT/MAT/XAT required for selection in KKMU programs. Also, submit the required documents.

B.Tech Eligibility & Duration

Usually, the eligibility criteria may vary depending on the university and its internal criteria. However, there are a few eligibility criteria in general that can be beneficial to consider. Here are the main aspects of the eligibility criteria to be considered.

  • Previous Education
It is necessary for all B.Tech lateral entry applicants to have completed a 3 year diploma in Engineering or other streams after the completion of their 10th grade or a 2 year diploma after their 12th grade. Applying without having these required criteria checked may result in an unsuccessful application process.
  • Scores
Another eligibility criterion is the percentage scored in the previous qualifying exam. It is necessary to have at least 45% to 60% in the previous qualifying exam based on the university policy. A candidate must have scored at least 45% aggregate in 3-year diploma. Most of the students do diploma after class 10th. Although, students who have completed diploma after 12th also is also eligible for B. tech lateral entry.
  • Subjects
It is necessary for students applying for a lateral entry B.Tech program to have studied physics, chemistry, and mathematics at the 12th grade level.
  • Entrance Exams
Applicants who are looking to secure admission into a government engineering college across all states must qualify for the state level entrance exams. If required, they should also possess the necessary domicile certificates.

The Engineering stream at our institution offers a comprehensive 4-year undergraduate degree program in B.Tech Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

Transfer Your Credits/Lateral Entry

KKMU offers opportunity to all transfer students (including polytechnic and diploma holders) provided you meet the eligibility criteria to pursue graduation in your respective study domain through a three-year regular graduation program such as BBA, B.Com and BCA apart from B.Tech. Students can apply for direct admission to the 2nd/3rd year of an undergraduate program at KKMU, through a special process managed by the relevant Department.

Difference Between Traditional B.Tech and Later Entry B.Tech Programs

There are 3 main areas of difference between a traditional B.Tech program and a lateral entry B.Tech program:

  • Duration of the Course
One of the key distinguishing factors between a traditional B.Tech course and a lateral entry B.Tech course is the duration of the program. A traditional B.Tech course typically spans four years, while a lateral entry B.Tech course is completed in three years. This difference in duration can significantly impact the academic experience and career trajectory of students pursuing these programs.
  • Admission Type
In a traditional B.Tech program, students are admitted to the first year of the program, similar to any other undergraduate degree. Conversely, lateral entry B.Tech students are admitted directly to the second year of the program. This allows for a more streamlined and efficient path to obtaining a B.Tech degree for those with prior academic experience or qualifications.
  • Eligibility
In order to enroll in a traditional B.Tech program, students must have successfully completed their 12th grade with physics, mathematics, and chemistry as their primary subjects. Alternatively, for the lateral entry B.Tech program, applicants must have obtained a diploma in a related field after finishing either their 10th or 12th grade. Opting for lateral entry into a B.Tech program following completion of a diploma is highly recommended.

Benefits of Lateral Entry B.Tech

There are several advantages of pursuing a course with lateral entry B.Tech. Some of the benefits are listed below:

  • Maximizing Efficiency and Savings
Since you have transferred to the second year, you do not need to pay for the first year. This helps save your money.
  • Recognition of Prior Learning and Experience
If you possess prior knowledge and experience in a specific field then this a fantastic opportunity for you. This means you can bypass starting from scratch and instead receive credit for the expertise you already have.
  • Accelerated Career Progression
With lateral entry you gain a significant edge in the competitive job market. Employers highly value candidates who possess a blend of practical experience and formal education. By entering the workforce sooner with a degree earned through lateral entry, you not only save time and money, but also gain a competitive advantage over your peers who enter the job market later. Needless to say, this advantage can result in enhanced job opportunities and a higher salary.
  • Focused and Enhanced Curriculum
Lateral entry programs cater to individuals with existing knowledge and experience, resulting in a curriculum that is more focused and directly applicable to their chosen field of study. As compared to traditional entry, lateral entry programs offer a more streamlined and relevant educational experience. This tailored approach allows you to customize your learning journey to suit your specific interests and professional aspirations, ultimately enhancing the value and impact of your education.
  • Flexibility in Learning for Working Professionals
Lateral entry programs are specifically tailored to meet the needs of working professionals who are unable to dedicate the time required for traditional four-year programs. With lateral entry, they can further their education without having to put their careers or other commitments on hold. This level of flexibility is particularly advantageous for those looking to improve their skills and qualifications while continuing to work.
  • Diverse Perspectives in The Classroom
Lateral entry can contribute to a diverse and enriching learning environment. This brings in new perspectives and real-world expertise. Embracing diversity in the classroom will install in you innovation and value for unique experiences and inspire new ideas. Concerns of Lateral Entry B.Tech

However, though the benefits are immense lateral entry B.Tech also presents certain challenges and concerns. Some of the hurdles that you might encounter with a lateral entry B.Tech program include:

  • You would necessarily require a diploma or a B.Sc. degree in order to apply for a lateral entry B. Tech program. If you do not meet these requirements, you would have to apply for a traditional B.Tech program that spans for 4 years.
  • Students who do not have a strong foundation with the basics that are necessary to pursue a B.Tech program might experience difficulties. Typically, the first year of a traditional B.Tech program primarily revolves around strengthening the basics across all subjects. As lateral entry B.Tech students join the program from the second year, you might miss out on these basics.
  • You may also have to face the challenge of an accelerated and fast-paced learning environment as you are more likely to jump right into your chosen stream or discipline. This will therefore leave you with less time to strengthen the basics and plan your path ahead.
